A record number of QPIX films have recently been accepted into film festivals.

WHEN THE TIDE TURNS will be screening at Flickerfest in January 2007, which means it’s eligible for an Academy Award nomination. The film was made as part of QPIX’s ‘Take one’ initiative.

Two other short films, WALKING OFF and HUMIDITY RISING, screened at the Bondi Film Festival in late November.

HUMIDITY RISING has also screened at the Real is Real Short Film Festival (where it won the best film award), the Queensland Short Film Festival (where editor Nicola Scarrott won the award for best editing), the Wagga Wagga Short Film Competition (where it won $2000) and the Adelaide Short Film Festival.

WHITE SONG won Best Director (Katrina Graham) and Best Cinematographer (Shing Fung Cheung) at the QSFF.

BLUE RINSE BANDITS has so far made four festival appearances, including the 2006 Toyota Muster ‘Movies at the Muster’, 2006 Communities For Communities Short Film Festival, 2006 Adelaide SHORTS Festival and 2006 Queensland Short Film Festival (where it was selected for screening on the opening night).

THE SALESMAN won the ‘Best Short - Dark Future category’ at the International Horror and Sci-Fi Festival in Phoenix, Arizona, on 28 October. It’s also screened at Show Me Shorts in Auckland and at Mountain Shorts in Katoomba in late November. THE SALESMAN was written and directed by David Rusanow and was produced by Kelly Chapman. It is a QPIX ‘Raw Nerve’ film.

WALKING OFF has made the final 14 of the Bondi short film Festival and screened on the 24 and 25 November at The Pavilion at Bondi. The festival received over 200 entries this year. Lead actor Mungo McKay is pictured above. The film was written and produced by Peter Blackburn and directed by Daniel Stevenson.

SHORN (above) screened at the Hollywood Film Festival as part of its shorts program on 20 October. In the past three years, a total of 44 Oscar® nominations and nine Oscars® were given to films they showcased and to the nominees and honorees of the Hollywood Awards. SHORN is producer Veronica Wain’s third short film and was directed by Martha Goddard. It was a QPIX ‘Raw Nerve’ film.

On 18 November 2006, SHORN director of photography (DOP) Julian Filer was highly commended for an Australian Cinematographers Society Award in the fictional drama shorts category.

Still from WALKING OFFQPIX productions have travelled all over the countryside and enjoyed the hospitality of locations all over the state. Producer Peter Blackburn took his team (director Daniel Stevenson, cinematographer Margie McClymont) to the outback town of Cunnamulla to capture the authenticity of the drought facing Queensland farmers to shoot the Silver Halide film WALKING OFF (pictured right). Veronica Wain needed a lot of sheep and chose the Jondaryan Woolshed for the production of SHORN (director Martha Goddard, cinematographer Julian Filer). Kane Sarota and Shane Dempsey (co-producers) enjoyed shooting amongst the cane fields in Jacobs Well for HUMIDITY RISING (director Louise Alston, cinematographer David Cordell). In June, productions will travel to Toowoomba (TOM'S WAKE) and back to Jacobs Well (WALKING OFF). Locally, THE SALESMAN was shot in the QPIX Jedda Room and the producers of both SLEEPING WAKE and INTERVIEW have chosen to shoot at Wacol jail. Producer Kelly Chapman (director Campbell Maynes, cinematographer Mark Broadbent) chose Fingal in northern New South Wales for the beach shoot WHEN THE TIDE TURNS.
